In 2018, I participated in a social workshop in Puno, Peru. Puno is a small community on the shores of Lake Titicaca in the Andes. The community suffers from extreme poverty. The women work in the potato and quinoa fields while the men work away in the cities.
I worked with a group of international students from Latin America and Europe to develop a project with and for the community. The project was led by architects from the Colombian architecture firm Ruta4 Taller. We worked with community leaders to revitalize a church in the remote hills that had been abandoned for over 50 years. During our workshop we learned local building techniques, like preparing a mud and straw bonding mixture, laying rocks, and securing rock forms.
