Boston has been working to identify itself as a city actively embracing the importance of climate readiness and climate justice. Climate Ready Boston’s interactive mapping tool documents issues like sea level rise and extreme heat overlaid on areas of “social vulnerability.” This mapping supports the city’s affirmation that climate justice is racial and economic justice, acknowledging that some Bostonians will be disproportionately affected by climate change.

Building on Boston’s work on climate change, a climatorium with three main goals was developed on the site. The climatorium will to act as a climate action hub for the departments behind Climate Ready Boston. The new headquarters will increase the visibility of local government work on climate change and the public’s accessibility to resources. It will also act as a climate condenser bringing in government employees, Climate Rready Boston affiliates and researchers, biotech workers, and citizens active in climate action into dialogue. Groups such as NOAH, Back Bay Green Initiatives, and others will be able to engage with government programs anticipating climate change. Lastly, the climatorium will be a public climate education center, exhibiting government and environmental work and cultivating a space for activism for students and citizens. A tower extends the program of this institutional anchor with a conference hotel that will serve as a hub for climate and government engagement for the region and support tourism to the climatorium.
